We use the algae species Haematococcus pluvialis, a freshwater species of Chlorophyta. This species is well known for its high content of astaxanthin. Interestingly, this algae is the primary diet of aquatic animals such as salmon, flamingos, shrimp, lobster, crab, etc. thus giving them their rich red/pink pigment.
